During World War I young men were sent to fight for problems created by the older generations. When the war was over they were anxious and cautious to conform back to the way things were before the war. Women, who had contributed so much to the war effort (not to mention lost many loved ones) were just as cautious. The now younger generation started to break away from traditional values. They were now well-skilled and educated, so there was no excuse for them to not try to find an occupation. Women in the news and actresses were all sporting the style, even though it was traditionally male. It made sense to the women to act like this, since they were already filling the jobs men did.
